The Venue

We will be spending six luscious nights at Kalani on the Big Island. As your senses immerse into the relaxing sounds of the jungle all your worries fade away. Or you can relax by the pool, or sip a cool refreshing drink from the luxury of your hammock. Time to unwind and be part of all the natural beauty around you.

As you feel the warmth of the sun, you decide to meander to the pristine sacred black sand beach which is just steps away. You can even view the amazing Pele’s lava flows. Pele’s hair is a form of lava. It is named after Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes… and form tiny droplets, which elongate perfectly straight, from a lava fountain. We will be spending six luscious nights at Kalani on the Big Island. Welcome to the jungle. Steps away from pristine black sand beaches, parks, and viewing points for Pele’s lava flows.

You let all your stresses go as you rest in your beautiful room with large screened walls giving you the sensation that you are outside with all the comforts of home. Soft light filters down on you as you gaze out – you can see for miles. The soft breeze caresses you to sleep. The natural construction of bamboo makes this a place where you can really unplug and let go.

The Cuisine

Imagine yourself being called to dinner by the ancient sound of the conch shell.  You are reminded of your deep belonging and the daily rhythms of ancestral village life and the rich cultural heritage of the mystical Hawaiian land that we will be fully experiencing. Kalani’s outdoor dining lanai is its central gathering place, where we eat our meals and is often referred to as the “heart” of the centre.

The abundance of Hawaii is celebrated by serving local tropical fruits and vegetables which inspire the chefs to create delicious and healthful meals. The chefs also believe in preparing each meal with Aloha and invest care and love into the cuisine.

One of the many blessings is the meals which are always fresh and inventive. The salad spread is incredible along with the amazing homemade salad dressings. As one past guest says “When I think of Retreats at Kalani, I immediately taste the food, smell the desserts and kiss the sky! The Kalani way of eating – healthy, abundant, creative, green, local, nothing wasted and cooked up with love. Wow, what a treat! Yum imagine yourself sitting down to freshly caught “grilled balsamic-marinated ahi with smoked tomato & dill vinaigrette, or mushroom-stuffed tofu with pineapple teriyaki sauce, smashed potato and parsnips, green beans with roasted red peppers, jicama and sweet potato salad fresh salad bar with house-made dressings and for dessert fresh Hawaiian mango and macadamia nut crisp.

About your Facilitator, Drea Phoenix

Drea-NamasteAs a little girl, I loved to escape reality, I read fantasy books or spent time in my secret spot by the river – I imagined the adventures I would have. I started my Yogic journey when I was 19 and followed my literal dreams all the way to India. My love of travel grew and my path became clear – love of Yoga and guiding people on their highest path. I am grateful for this path as it has served me through very difficult points in my life. One of these the loss of my baby daughter. I would have fallen into the abyss forever had it not been for my ability to breathe in and out and the reminder that we are never alone that we are always held. My journey gave me a greater insight into loss and grief and shone a light of compassion for others.

I am a Certified Senior Yoga Teacher (RYT 500) and I have studied with many teachers including: John Ogilvie, Shiva Rea, Bernie Clark, and Baba G. My Yoga style ranges from a challenging yet nurturing vinyasa flow to a gentle restorative and Yin yoga. My passion is seeing others shine bright!

I live with my partner and my 3 boys in Nelson BC, Canada.

“Drea is the reason that I finally stuck with yoga, she is a patient, clear, communicative, hands-on teacher. She instills confidence in you while still pushing you. I appreciate the humor and lightness she brings to her classes; it helps to get through the more challenging poses. I always look forward to her classes and always leave feeling energized.” ~ Erin Bruce
